Presented here are some of the most widespread methods and ritual approaches to curing in Nordic folk magic.
They have been used to cure and remove diseases as well as bad luck or destroyed conditions in
all areas of life.
To Bite away
For the one who suffered from tooth ace there was a possibility to transfer the problem to someone or something else by biting it.
Usually this was done on the ring attached to the church door on a Thursday while the moon was waning.
To Blow away
A sickness could occur by some spirit of nature blowing their breath towards you. The remedy was usually to blow back by blowing on the diseased or troubled spot.
This could be done by blowing directly with the lips near the target or by blowing through hollow nettle or reed stalks.
Blown water (water that had been collected at a certain spot and blown into through nine stalks or with a blacksmiths bellows)
is often used in ritual anointments.
Here is one of the many formulas used when performing such a ritual:
translation:"Jag blåser i öster, jag blåser i väster, jag blåser i syd, jag blåser i nord,
Jag blåser i luften, jag blåser i vatten.
Jag blåser i jord, jag blåser i ljus.
Jag blåser för natten,
Jag blåser för alltid all krankhet i väg."
To Burn away"I blow to the East, I blow to the West, I blow to the South, I blow to the North,
I blow in the air, I blow in the water
I blow in earth, I blow in light
I blow for the night
I blow forever all disease away"
To Draw/paint away
This method often involve drawing pentagrams, horse shoe patterns and alike on the injured or troubled spot on the clients body.
To Dig down
To put away on a tree
This metod may involve any kind of trouble or disease. One of most common thing to remove in this manner is toothace.
The methods and the type of tree varies during the ages but here is an example of how it is usually done;
To do this the trollman takes some hairs, nails and some piece of cloth that has been cut from a used piece of the patents
clothing. if the patient has been in bed for a ong time, some small piece of the sheets are also taken.
He then goes out to a tree and carefully remove a square pice of bark on the north side of the tree. A hole is then
made and the personal effects are pput in the hole. The bark is put back and a red string is tied around the tree to keep it in place.
Total silence is mostly accompanied the whole process and it is done on a thursday morning or night when the moon is waning.
To Chop away
The process of chopping away something is most often used for joint pains. It is done either on the threshold to a house (preferably in
a doorway wich faces North.) or on the main wood chopping stump.
The patient places the sour joint on the wood and the trollman grabs an axe and the following spell-conversation is held:
Trollman - "Jag hugger, Jag hugger!"
Patient - "Vad hugger du for?
Trollman - "Ja hugger for vred och in i ved!"
Translation:
Trollman - "I chop, I chop!"
Patient - "What are you chopping for?
Trollman - "I am chopping for vred and into wood!"He then chops hard down into the wood just next to the limb.
The process is usually repeated three times.
To bind to earth
This method is probably THE most common way of removing diseases, especially child diseases.
It usually goes like this. The trollkvinna and a helper brings the child to a tree with large roots.
The earth benieth onne of the roots are removed to make a hole, small enough for the child to be dragged through.
The child is then dragged ansyls (counterclockwise) three time through the hole.
The process is always done under total silence from the minute thhey leave the house until everyone returns home.
This is sometimes done by pinning up a large piece of grass and crawled trough. Usually this is done at a graveyeard.
In the old days the process was called "passing the jewel of the earth".
To Throw away
If this method is used separatly one often takes hairs from all parts of the patients body, nails from all fingers and toes,
cut out a piece of clothing or just removes a thin thread. These items are brought to a crossroad and throwed over
the left shoulder with the words:
"Take this, and leave N.N. [name of the patient] alone!"
The process usually requires total silence from the time the gathering of items start until one has returned home from the crossroad.
If meeting someone on the road, do not greet or speak a word.

To Sacrifice away
This method is usually based on the old belief that nature spirits was the most common cause of disease
and involves offering gifts for them to remove the disease.
Small dolls, pins or coins are left to them at certain places often with the same words as mentioned previously
under "To throw away".
To Steal or Buy the problem or disease
The buying method is mostly used when removing warts. One offers a certain amount of money for each wart
and once the deal is done in a most serious manner one shakes hands and the amount is payed as son as a wart
dissappears>. The method of stealing a disease goes like this. One sneaks secretly into the bedroom of the diseased
and cuts a small piece of the bedsheets and a bit of hair (with the intent and mindset focused on stealing the disease).
The pieces are kept tucked away in a safe and hidden spot until the diseased is well and then disposed off by throwing them
towards the North or burying them at a graveyard. The whole process must be kept secret from everyone.
To Count away

To Smoke away
This method employs the use of incense. Incence in the trolldom tradition can either mean smoking with a single herb, mineral or
other ingredient (like Tar for example), or the use of compound incenses. If smoking a person or an animal to remove destroyed
conditions the burning incense is passed in three circles ansyls (counterclockwise) around the head, then three times around the waist>br>
and three times around the feet. Sometimes the patient is placed on a chair and covered by a sheet and the insence is placed under the chair.
Houses and stables are also commonly smoked to remove evil and forgjorelse (destroyed conditions).
The oldest type of insence is usually leaves from nine leaf bearing trees or nine fruit bearing trees.
others may include Asafetida (the resin of Ferula Asafoetida), Sulfur, Tibast (Daphne Mezereum), Virak (Frankincese),
Masterwort (Imperatoria ostruthium L.) and so on.
Up until the time around 1940 a compound insence was still sold at Swedish pharmacys under the name of "Trollroekelse".
To Shoot away

fear of flying...
One of the most traditional methods among Swedish trolldom practitioners goes as follows:
Pour up a big glass of grain alcohole,
either put the left ring finger (also called the nameless finger in old Scandinavia) into it or a magical knife
and stir counterclockwise (Swe:"ansyls") while saying a formula into it three times. The mouth should be held close
to the alcohole so the breath will reach it when you speak.
The formula is read three times and after that the patient should drink three sips. The alcolhole is then anointed
to the body of the patient.
The anointment starts from the head and goes across the body out to left arm, then right arm, then from left ear
down to the right foot, then from left ear to right. All joints are anointed counter clockwise during the process.
What remains of the alcohol after the process is poured out on the north side of an earth bound rock, on a crossroad
or on the graveyard by throwing it over the left shoulder and walking away without looking back.
After payment has been done an old tabu states that the patient should not by any circumstances say thank you.
In modern days this old form is mostly ignored, but some workers still carry it on.
There are many, many formulas used but one of the most common all-purpose fomula translates like this;
"Jesus and St.Peter
walked side by side on the road
there they met [the problem, the devil, etc.]
Peter said:
I'm going to put you
on a mountain where no one gows
on a lake where no one rows
under an earth bound rock on the bottom of the Ocean
where you will be of harm to no one
In three holy names; The Father, The Son and the Holy Ghost!"
